Smart Carbon Farming launches free online training programme for farmers

The Smart Carbon Farming project launched a new online training programme to help farmers build the knowledge and skills needed to adopt carbon farming practices while improving the long-term resilience of their farms.

Designed for farmers, advisors and others working in agriculture, the programme combines practical guidance on soil management with an introduction to carbon monitoring and financing opportunities. Participants will learn how regenerative farming practices can improve soil health, strengthen resilience to extreme weather, and contribute to more sustainable farm management.

What the training covers

The programme is divided into three modules:

  • Carbon farming in practice: Explore regenerative farming practices suitable for both mineral and organic soils, including approaches to improve soil health, increase carbon storage and enhance water retention.

  • Monitoring soil health: Learn practical field-based methods to assess soil condition, alongside an introduction to Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) technologies used to measure and track carbon outcomes.

  • Carbon finance: Gain an overview of carbon markets and financing mechanisms, including how carbon credits work and how environmental benefits can create additional value for farms.

Flexible online learning and certificate

The training is delivered entirely online, allowing participants to complete the course at their own pace from any connected device. The full programme takes approximately 10 hours to complete, and participants who successfully finish the course will receive a certificate.

The course will be available in English, French, German and Dutch.

Who should participate?

The training is intended for farmers interested in integrating carbon farming practices into their operations, whether they are just beginning their journey or looking to expand existing knowledge. Agricultural advisors, students and other professionals supporting the agricultural sector are also encouraged to participate.

By combining practical farming knowledge with an understanding of carbon monitoring and financing, the programme aims to help participants make informed decisions that benefit both their businesses and the environment.
